Serif Vendor Pivots to Produce PPE for Frontline Healthcare Workers

As essential employees feel the shortage of masks, Central Scenic is finding creative ways to give back to its community—and create jobs for its professional network.

Central Scenic is a Columbus-based custom fabrication company. As a longtime creative partner, Central Scenic custom-built the Serif office and has collaborated with us on many production sets over the years to help bring our ideas to life for our clients.

As the need for masks for healthcare and other essential workers became more and more critical, Central Scenic recognized that it had many of the required resources to create personal protective equipment (PPE). Seeing the need and wanting to help, Central Scenic staff transformed its space in Columbus and set to work on creating and distributing masks to doctors, nurses, and therapists who are dedicated to treating patients in need.

PPE Medical Face Shield
The PPE medical face shields are 5x thicker than a standard shield for reusability and future sanitation.

Since starting in late March, Central Scenic is aiming to make 13,500 face shields, with plans to scale output as needed. It is currently taking direct orders from suppliers, in addition to starting a GoFundMe in order to crowdsource costs for more materials to produce and donate masks directly to hospitals, testing sites, primary care, and skilled nursing home facilities.

Mask production has also provided a unique opportunity for Central Scenic to support its staff. Like many companies, the shutdown was taking a toll on business. “Stay-at-home orders across the U.S. have dried up project work, museum work, and decimated live-action productions,” Central Scenic Shane Bonnette said in a press release.

By pivoting its operations to produce masks, Central Scenic is able to keep its entire staff on payroll, despite the shutdown causing new work to slow and scheduled contracts to be delayed. As mask orders continue to come in, employees hope this small effort will help carry the business and even create temporary work opportunities for furloughed freelancers in the film production industry.

“Even in a small capacity, answering the call to help healthcare professionals ultimately take care of our community is a higher calling that we are proud to help,” Bonnette said.

Serif is proud to work with vendors and suppliers who believe in collaboration, even when it takes sacrifice. We hope that we can all rally, and in some small part, help to protect our community.

You can head to the GoFundMe fundraiser to support the cause by clicking here. For every $10 donation, Central Scenic will supply a reusable mask to a healthcare professional.
